Right to Counsel
Fighting for every tenant facing eviction to have access to legal representation.
The Problem
Right now in Montana, tenants facing eviction do not have the right to a free attorney. Landlords almost always have legal representation — tenants almost never do. This power imbalance means tenants lose eviction cases they could have won, and families are displaced from their homes unnecessarily.
What MTU Is Doing
The Missoula Tenants Union is working to change this. We are advocating for Right to Counsel legislation that would guarantee every tenant facing eviction in Missoula access to legal representation — similar to programs already in place in other cities across the country.
